Speaking to TheWrap, Matt and Ross Duffer peeled back the shadows to reveal why our favorite monsters took a back seat in this reckoning. Turns out, Vecna was blindsided by the attack. Completely thrown off, he didn’t have time to assemble his cronies. With the Mind Flayer backing him up, why call in the demogorgon cavalry? Though in hindsight, relying solely on the Mind Flayer wasn’t Vecna’s wisest call.

Now, here's the juicy bit: the creatures of destruction aren’t just warming benches in The Abyss. According to the Duffer brothers, there’s a scarcity of demogorgons in Vecna’s realm. Plus, they dropped a bombshell about 'demo fatigue.' In Season 5’s first volume, Will’s mind-blowing power awakening laid waste to these terrifying fiends. Having another demogorgon face-off might have been overkill, the brothers feared.

“One of the other things we talked about was just demo fatigue,” said Matt Duffer. Keeping the spotlight on Vecna and the big bad Mind Flayer seemed like the way to go. They even toyed with a wild idea of heroes stumbling into a field of demo eggs—imagine Aliens meets the Upside Down!

Some super fans believe the finale wasn’t the same without a demogorgon showdown, with suggestions of Will commanding these creatures to turn against their former masters. But alas, the curtain has closed on the Upside Down, leaving demogorgons trapped in The Abyss—hopefully never to return!
